This half day tour takes you up close to some of the Caribbean Sea’s most dramatic wildlife
About Bocas del Toro
The irregular green forms splashed across the map are evocative of the untamed spirit of Bocas del Toro. The splintered outline of the archipelago and creeping peninsulas suggest treasure chests and unexplored islands; sailing over sapphire seas and explorations through wild jungle terrain; encounters with natives and strange creatures of the deep.
The buried treasure was never unearthed, but for modern visitors to Bocas there are more precious discoveries to be made. Bocas´ remoteness means that unique species have emerged - such as the emblematic poison dart frogs, whose jewel-like skins have evolved into different colors on each island and the mainland. Likewise, the region’s diverse cultures – from the indigenous Ngöbe and Naso, to the Afro-Carribbeans and Latinos - have retained their own languages, beliefs, and customs through the centuries, isolated as they are by water and impenetrable jungle.
The archipelago remains relatively undeveloped; Isla Colón is the only island with any roads or vehicles. This leaves visitors to enjoy the clean air, the sound of the waves, and the exotic noises of the jungle—home to monkeys, sloths, toucans, and a spectacular variety of medicinal plants and exotic fruits. The sea is no less abundant with life. Elusive manatees, endangered sea turtles, playful dolphins and vivid reefs fill the waters off the region. The opportunities for diving and snorkeling are endless, and the waves crashing over these reefs draw surfers from across the globe.
The empty, postcard-perfect beaches which cling to the edges of the forests are draped with coconut trees leaning over aquamarine water. Reached only by boat or by hiking through the jungle, the castaway clichés are hard to avoid. If you´re wondering where everyone is – they´re probably sipping cocktails and dancing to the pounding salsa back in Bocas town, where you´ll find a party over the water every night of the week, and a chance to share your traveler's tales.
