Meals

As well as bananas, plantains, pineapples, oranges, coconuts and mangoes, more unusual crops grown around the village include dachine (a root crop similar to a potato); maranones (a type of juicy apple); pifa (similar to squash);  and calaloo (the leaf of one of the root crops).

Staying at Salt Creek will give you the opportunity to try this delicious, traditional Caribbean food, much of it unique to this region. It is usually served with freshly caught fish such as snapper, yellowtail or Jack, and white rice.

Sustainability

The meals served in the village are prepared with fresh, locally-grown ingredients by residents. All guides are native and have participated in training programs. The tours offered as part of the packages include low impact activities, such as hiking, surfing and bird and wildlife watching, and the trails used are well-maintained by local families, in order to reduce damage to the surrounding environment.

The selection of tours and lodging at Salt Creek are run entirely by the community´s tourism alliance, Aliatur. Tourism offers the residents an incentive to preserve their land, maintain cultural traditions, and pass on the history and beliefs of the community through demonstrations, workshops, the preparation of meals and the sale of traditional crafts.
