Our Story

We began building our house and planting our garden in 2003. Our land was cow pasture before we started planting and the only trees that stood were the cacao grove, the tall old coconut palms, a lemon tree, an avocado tree and a couple of guava trees, none of which were producing many, if any fruits at all.
In six years we have planted more than half of our four hectare farm with a mixture of fruit and local wood producing trees, we have left the rest so the natural wild species can prevail and our horse can run free!

Our Cabin

From the deck of our exclusive guest cabin high up on the hill, you overlook the islands of Carenero and Colon as well as the famous surf break Silver Back and the open Caribbean sea. The cabin has a double bed, with room for an extra guest on the sofa bed, and we offer a dinner menu for when you do not feel like cooking.

There are two gorgeous beaches within easy walking distance and you can organize a tour by boat any day to any part of the archipelago. Many animals and birds can be spotted day and night around the cabin and the surrounding land, including sloths, night monkeys, hummingbirds, owls, armadillos and more.

Here at Up In The Hill, it's peaceful with amazing views in every direction and the breeze is always blowing.

Our Cafe

Our coffee shop is situated on the top of the highest hill of Isla Bastimentos. The short walk from Old Bank takes you along a jungle path where you can spot sloths, red frogs and various birds and butterflies.

We serve garden teas, fresh organic fruit juices and pure chocolate bakes, all of which comes from our organic farm. Enjoy a breakfast of delicious wholemeal pancakes with organic cacao and plenty of bananas. Our coffee is fresh from Boquete and tastes great!

Our Shop

Our little shop sits in the middle of our garden, so flowers and hummingbirds keep you smiling as you browse!

We make and sell 100% pure Cacao, wooden arts and crafts as well as mosaic art made from broken ceramic tiles.

From the Ngöbe community of Salt Creek we have a selection of chacara bags, hand woven in the traditional way from natural fibers.

From the town of Old Bank we have a variety of unique purses and bags, some of which are made from recycled plastic bags. There is also local jewellery created with shells, seeds and intricate weaves, as well as handmade European glass bead jewellery. Handmade wooden gift boxes come to us from Isla Bastimentos also.

Pure Tree Products

Handmade and bottled here at Up in the Hill, our Pure Tree Natural Body Products come to you straight from our organic garden. Pure organic coconut oil infused with flowers, roots, grasses and seeds is the base of every product we make.

We do not use chemical preservatives in our products, but due to the natural preservatives in coconut oil and its long life stability, our products will keep well for up to a year.

Guests are welcome to watch and participate in the making of our 100% cacao and organic coconut oil.  Some of these products are also available at the BSTA Tourist Information center - please ask for more information.

Sustainability

We use rain catchment and solar power both at our shop/house and the guest cabin. Both of these were constructed mainly from wood grown on our land. We recycle all plastic and glass, and compost all paper and organic material.

We were involved in the turtle conservation project here on the island for a number of years, and we have also taken part and help organize rubbish clean ups in the town of Old Bank. We do use organic and locally sourced products whenever possible and we do support the local artisans, specifically here on the island of Bastimentos

On our farm, we use only homemade compost as our number one fertilizer.
