Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Tour
| Location: | Isla Colon |
The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) is a non-profit entity whose mission is to increase and diffuse understanding of the past, present and future of tropical biodiversity and its relevance to human welfare.
The location of the six-hectare site is perfect for marine and terrestrial study, as it is surrounded by diverse ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrass, coral reefs and tropical forest.
The Tour
The two-hour guided tour will take you through the laboratory, past the aquariums (when in operation), and interpretative panels.
Learn about the projects featuring the multi-colored poison dart frogs characteristic of the region. Caimans and wading birds inhabit the natural pond in front of the station, while a nature trail takes you past leaf-cutter ants and sloths. A new dock reaches out through red mangroves and allows you to peer through the clear waters below at the anemones, star fish and other sea creatures.
Volunteer guides conduct tours in English and Spanish.
When and Where?
Free guided tours of the Station are offered every Thursday and Friday from 3-5pm, though it’s recommended to call ahead to make sure there will be someone to meet you. While there is no charge for the tour, your donations support programs with local schools.
You can rent a bike - it’s an enjoyable 15 minute ride up the coast from town.
Alternatively, take a taxi from Bocas town to the Smithsonian. The price is 50 cents per person.
