Bocas del Toro is home to many exotic avian species, especially on the province’s mainland.

Toucans, green parrots and tiny iridescent hummingbirds are some of the most beautiful and easily observed species throughout the forests, while wading birds line the inland riverbanks, pelicans skim the ocean's surface, and the exotic sound of the Montezuma Oropendola can be heard echoing around the forest canopy.

Swan’s Cay, a rocky outcrop west of Isla Colon also known as Isla Párajos – or Bird Island – is another popular spot for birdwatchers. Here, visitors may observe the rare red-billed tropicbird and white-crowned pigeons. Many northern raptors spend the cold months in Central America, and around 500,000 individuals pass through this region on their annual migration.
