The Bocas Sustainable Tourism Alliance (BSTA) and its Waste Management Committee (WMC) participated in the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute’s (STRI) Environmental Fair on June 13th & 14th at the STRI’s research station on Isla Colon. This annual event aims to educate the general public of Bocas about pertinent local and global environmental issues, and also to share the work of Smithsonian reserachers and environmentally-focused organizations in the archipelago.

Though this year’s turnout was lower than expected due to rain on Saturday, the BSTA and WMC members were able to share information about the organization, its membership benefits, and its current and planned activities. For the WMC, the Fair provided a wonderful forum to network and meet other concerned community members who are actively seeking to solve some of the solid waste management issues on Bocas.

Catta Monahan, the WMC Coordinator, particpated in a Forum on Sunday focusing on local recycling and composting programs.  The level of interest for an archipelago-wide recycling program was evident from the participation of representatives from Almirante to Bluff Beach. The BSTA and the WMC consider their participation in the event a success, as more people in Bocas are aware of the organization and its plans to create a new paradigm of sustainable tourism here.

The BSTA would like to thank all of its volunteers who participated, and also the USAID staff from the CCAW (Conservation of Central American Watersheds) program for producing the outreach materials.
