The USAID Conservation of Central American Watersheds Program is working to protect the unique biodiversity of the region by strengthening sustainable tourism in Bocas del Toro. Within this program, Solimar International is implementing the “Bocas del Toro Geotourism Initiative” to promote “tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place – its environment, culture, aesthetics, and the well-being of its residents.” This concept known as Geotourism, created by National Geographic’s Center for Sustainable Destinations, invites residents and visitors to nominate attractions that reflect and support the region’s distinctive character and help tell the story of communities, landscapes and places in Bocas del Toro. A test to determine geotourism assets:

“Is the site, attraction, business, activity or event somehow distinctive to our community or region?”
